We recently finished up a booklet for an upcoming conference called Beyond: Planting Churches Among Unreached People Groups. The conference will gather missionaries from around the world to discuss church-planting strategies among unreached people groups. The booklet highlighted opportunities that will be available the week of the conference, information about location, travel, speakers, and other booking details, as well as a schedule of events. For this piece, we wanted to show people and places from all corners of the world. We used clean typography, modern design elements, and unconventional layouts to emphasize the conference’s focus on current strategies for moving forward in their mission.

Project: Winter 2013 Board Report

Responsibilities: Design

For this winter’s bi-annual board report, Eurasia focused on six ministries in six different cities in Eurasia. Each article highlights a missionary’s vision for their region, and the exciting new opportunities they are having to serve the people of Eurasia. The introduction also features some Eurasia-wide stats, and letter from the director. Our design included the typical bold colors and large photography of the Eurasia brand, but we gave it some new life with more modern typography and less texture than Eurasia’s other pieces. We wanted this report to stand out by showing off it’s bright, cheery colors and shapes, and as always, let the photography tell the stories.

Project: Lordship & Lostness conference banners

Responsibilities: Design

The Africa Region of Assemblies of God World Missions held a conference, called Lordship & Lostness, for their African missionaries to re-energize them to reach unreached people groups throughout Africa. For the conference, we created one hanging over-head banner with the conference title, a series of standing banners to emphasize the key areas they focus on as missionaries, and another hanging banner that illustrated a collection of challenging statistics on the African continent.

Project: Branding, Gift Catalog, & Website

Responsibilities: Design & Development

Red Envelope Compassion is an organization that gives gifts of sustainability, healthcare, livestock and education to rural areas of Northern Asia. The concept is based on an ancient tradition in the region of giving gifts to one another, packaged in red envelopes. We had the opportunity to work with Red Envelope to develop their logo, as well as a print catalog and website designed to show giving options and process orders. Using red as the primary color, we also used a rice-paper texture, and custom hand lettering to further emphasize and personalize the ancient tradition.

The Believe campaign encourages members of the AG to come together at General Council and believe for God to do greater things. They want to communicate the importance of unity, so we used an illustration of a dandelion to show many small parts making up a whole. For typography, we used a bold, dramatic serif for “Believe” and more subtle italic serifs for the subheaders. We show the logo here on the two main colors that are used throughout the rest of the materials: stark black and electric yellow. Our goal with this brand is to appeal to both the experienced, long-attending pastors as well as the young, up-and-coming leaders.

Project: Logo, Business Card, Letterhead, Envelope, Ad/Flyer

We recently had the opportunity to create a logo and identity set for a new church starting in Sacramento, California. Project Church will reach out to 30-somethings in the heart of downtown Sacramento, and will hopefully be a launching pad for additional church locations in the future. With their launch date set for January 2013, their goal is to minister to young, artistic, influential individuals in the area, so we wanted their logo to appeal to this demographic. We wanted to create something super simple that could translate well into other ministries (kids, youth, outreach, additional church sites, etc.). We used a simple arrow to show forward movement, and a mix of modern and traditional typography – together they form a clean, professional identity that will resonate with the culture of Sacramento. For the additional pieces, we incorporated subtle textures, unique color combinations, artistic photos of the city, and a hint of a retro-vibe to further emphasize the young, creative crowd Project Church is trying to attract.

Project: Logo Design

Chi Alpha Expeditions organizes short- and long-term missions trips for university Chi Alpha students all over the world. They work with AG missionaries overseas and stateside to expose students to life on the mission field. They encourage students to “give a year, and pray about a lifetime.” Chi Alpha Expeditions was in need of a new logo that was more simple, clean and appealed to international university-age students. We created a simple suitcase shape, with an abstracted “XA” overlaid, and clean sans-serif typography underneath. They plan to use the icon alone on certain materials, so we were sure to incorporate the often-used abbreviation “XA”, so it would still be associated with Chi Alpha.

We had our first board meeting this month with the other members, and we’re excited to jump in and start planning out the year at AAF. Plans for the ADDY Awards judging weekend and ceremony have already begun, and we think it will be one of the best years yet. We’re also anxious to network with the other board members, many of whom come from various industries such as television, marketing, journalism, and public relations.

The AAF’s first monthly event will be held on Tuesday, October 16, and feature Jane Maas, author of Mad Women: The Other Side of Life on Madison Avenue in the Sixties and Beyond. Maas has had a long career in the advertising industry in New York City (including work on the I Love New York campaign), and her tell-all book gives a firsthand look at the roll women played behind the scenes in advertising during the 1960s. The evening will be held at the Tower Club in Springfield, reflecting the style of the hit television series Mad Men, and include cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a book signing.
